A study on insourcing and digital restructuring in the manufacturing industry

Finally, supply shortages resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict have contributed to changing public and corporate debates on the restructuring of value chains. While the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing have long been the focus, recently, the question of under what conditions it might be sensible to internalize outsourced value-added activities is increasingly coming to the forefront, along with the significance of digital technologies in restructuring. However, little is currently known about the prevalence of insourcing, its various forms, underlying motives, and key players. We address this issue using the example of the manufacturing industry.
